Ordered to Work Again, Apple Employees Protest

Jakarta

Employees Apple protesting the company’s policy of asking them to return to work from the office starting next September.

Under the policy, Apple employees are required to return to work from the office three days a week. However, they protested the policy through a letter circulating internally.

In the protest, the employees asked for a more flexible approach. That is where employees can still work from home if that’s what they want, he was quoted as saying detikINET from The Verge, Saturday (5/6/2021).

“We would like to take this opportunity to communicate a growing concern among employees. Apple’s policies regarding remote or flexible working locations, and the communications behind it, have prompted a number of our colleagues to resign,” they wrote in the letter.

“Without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us have to choose between family, health, being able to work well, or being part of Apple.”

This letter comes just two days after Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a message to his employees, requiring them to return to the office every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday starting next fall.

Most of the employees can work remotely twice a week. However, they can also work remotely for up to two weeks each year, subject to permission from their manager.

Compared to other tech companies like Twitter and Facebook, Apple’s policy is much different. The two social media companies allow their employees to work from home forever, even when the pandemic is over.

The letter was addressed to Tim Cook, and started with a channel on Slack called ‘remote work advocates, which has 2800 people. There were about 80 people involved in writing the letter.

According to them, allowing working remotely is critical to company diversity and inclusion. “For inclusion and diversity to work, we must recognize our differences, and with all of those differences come different needs and different ways to thrive,” they wrote.
