Nakita.id – Diabetes is one of the most common diseases suffered by the world’s population.
This sugar disease has even claimed hundreds of lives of Indonesians every year.
In 2019, Indonesia was ranked 6th in the most cases of people with diabetes worldwide.
According to the results of the Riskesdas (Basic Health Research) research from the Indonesian Ministry of Health in 2013, around 12 million Indonesians over the age of 15 have type 2 diabetes.
But only 26% have been diagnosed, while the rest are not aware that they have type 2 diabetes.
The bad news is that the high number of people with diabetes in the country is allegedly due to this trivial habit.
Launching from Kompas.comHere are the habits of the Indonesian people which can actually be the cause of diabetes.
1. Rice as a staple food
White rice is the staple food of Indonesians.
But unfortunately, according to recent research, rice has a high risk of increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
A study found that the group that ate white rice more than five times a week had a 17 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than the group that ate it only once a month.
The study also reported that this risk will increase by 10% in people who eat large portions of white rice every day.
This association was found mainly in people in Asia who consumed up to 3-4 servings of rice a day.
This study has not actually been able to prove a cause and effect relationship, but only shows a link between white rice consumption and diabetes.
But at least, this research can be a start to start a healthy life by eating foods that contain whole grains or complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates.
2. The habit of tea and coffee
It’s not tea or coffee that causes diabetes, but the sugar we put in tea or coffee that increases the risk of diabetes.
Especially if we have a hobby of tea and coffee throughout the day.
Not only drinks, the use of sugar is also very common in our food.
Calculation of the amount of daily carbohydrate intake is important because excess carbohydrates affect blood sugar more than any other nutrient.
In fact, many types of carbohydrates are contained in foods and beverages. Sugar is one of them.
There are many kinds of sugar. The most commonly consumed example is granulated sugar.
But actually, an important factor in the safety of sugar consumption is how much it is consumed.
Whether granulated sugar, rock sugar or other types of sugar, if consumed in excess, it is still at risk of leading a person to be overweight or obese.
Ultimately, this condition leads to an increased chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
Not surprisingly, excessive sugar consumption can be a cause of diabetes.
3. Lazy to move
Indonesians are the laziest to walk.
At least that’s the findings of a number of US scientists who studied cell phone data from hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Stanford University researchers used minute-by-minute data from 700,000 people who used Argus, an activity monitoring app, on their cell phones.
As a result, Hong Kong residents are at the top of the list of the most avid walkers.
The average Hong Kong public walks 6,880 steps per day.
The people who are the laziest to walk in the world are Indonesians who are in the lowest position by recording 3,513 steps per day.
Although it feels comfortable to do activities while sitting, but actually there is a hidden threat to health.
If you sit mostly, then the use of the large muscles in the body will decrease.
As a result, the body’s need for sugar and fat decreases. Your body thinks you don’t need energy.
This can result in fat accumulation, increased fat sugar content blood and cholesterol.
Over time, blood sugar tolerance disorders will occur, triggering disease diabetes.
While high cholesterol levels are at risk of triggering heart disease and stroke.
So it’s not surprising that this lifestyle can be the cause diabetes.
