Winterthur (pts013/02.03.2021/10:00) – Thursday, March 4th, is World Obesity Day. A day that the Obesity Network takes as an opportunity to inform the general public about the disease obesity, to impart knowledge and to promote understanding for those affected. The Obesity Network invites you to an online information event for those affected and interested on March 4th.

Obesity is a nutritional and metabolic disease also known as obesity or obesity. Those affected not only suffer from their weight, they often develop serious comorbidities, including diabetes, sleep apnea syndrome and cardiovascular diseases.

Around 42% of the adult population in Switzerland is overweight, of which 11% are obese (1). Around 15% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese (1). The disease obesity has thus reached epidemic proportions. People with obesity are often stigmatized. They are blamed for being overweight because they exercise too little and eat too much.

Obesity is a chronic disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared obesity as a disease back in 2008 (1). In order to inform the general public about obesity and to show solidarity for those affected, the obesity network is organizing an online information event on March 4th.

About obesity
The term “obesity” comes from Latin and means severe or pathological excess weight. It is often translated as “obesity” or “obesity”. The WHO speaks of obesity from a body mass index (BMI) of 30. The proportion of obese people has doubled within 25 years. (2) Every tenth person in Switzerland is obese (2). Overweight and obesity are risk factors for numerous diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes obesity as the biggest chronic health problem of all.

Via the obesity network
The obesity network is the result of a cooperation between the Schaffhausen hospitals, the Winterthur Cantonal Hospital and the GZO Spital Wetzikon. It was founded in 2015 and has existed as an association since 2019. In the obesity network, an interdisciplinary team of experts accompanies and treats obese patients from the initial consultation through the choice of therapy to the follow-up care of a bariatric operation. The network is strengthened by the close and coordinated cooperation with referring physicians and partners who share the network’s vision.
