One third of New York City public school buildings have closed due to the health crisis.
Whether it’s a one-day shutdown or an extended shutdown, the figure hit 373 this week, according to the Department of Education’s daily tracker.
The number set a record for closures since 878 schools reopened face-to-face learning for K-5, 3-K and pre-K students. In all, 312 schools closed Thursday.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that the “vast majority” of schools – two-thirds of them – are still open.
The president said the closures are a necessary step to keep students and teachers safe.
“Nobody likes it,” he said.
“And we want to be absolutely sure when that kind of closure has to happen … That’s what has made our schools the safest in the country,” he added.
As of Thursday, 91 buildings are under one-day closures and 221 are under extended 10-day closures.
