Number of corona cases rises fifth day in a row, on average 90 …

The average daily number of infections with COVID-19 in the past week has risen again by 2 percent, to 90.3. This is evident from Monday’s data from Sciensano. Belgium now has 62,707 confirmed cases since the start of the crisis, 101 more than the total communicated on Sunday. “We have to pay attention,” says virologist Marc Van Ranst Radio 1.

The number of infections increased slightly for the fifth day in a row. In the period from July 3 to 9, the most recent series for which figures are available, the average was 90.3 per day. The increase mainly occurred in the province of Antwerp, in Brussels and in the south of West Flanders.

“We have indeed seen a slight increase for five days,” virologist Marc Van Ranst says on Monday Radio 1. “It always rises slightly, and then you risk being rocked to sleep. You can say every time that it is only a small increase, but everything together you see it going up. Fortunately, we do not see an increase in the number of hospital admissions. Although that will also increase if contamination continues to emerge. ”

No surprise

It is no surprise, according to Van Ranst, that the number of infections is rising. “People pay less attention to the measures and life goes more and more normally. That’s normal and human, but it takes its toll. We have to pay attention. ” Young people in particular seem to be affected at the moment. That does not surprise Van Ranst either. “Their exams are done, they see each other more and travel more: that’s expected.”

“The obligation of mouth masks came just to avoid situations like this,” the virologist says. “An epidemic, we can all get it out of the world together.”

According to Van Ranst, there is currently no need to tighten up the measures again. “But we have to be very vigilant. The measures that are now in place simply need to be better monitored. ”
