Number of arrests after riots at demonstration The Hague rises to 437 | NOW

The number of arrests after last week’s demonstration against the coronas emergency law in Malieveld in The Hague has increased to 437, the police announced. This Saturday, another person was arrested, who is still detained with one other person.

That person was part of a group of eleven persons suspected of public violence. All other arrests were made because protesters refused to leave, but many were quickly dispatched.

The man arrested on Saturday is suspected of involvement in the disturbances that arose after the demonstration. Agents were able to trace 61-year-old Hagenaar by means of camera images. Further arrests are not excluded.

Last Saturday there was initially still a friendly atmosphere. However, it turned when it got busier and officers asked protesters to leave.

“Agents have been attacked and pelted with stones and smoke bombs”

Police report that protesters threw smoke bombs and stones and also attacked riot police. The protesters are said to have been supporters of various football clubs who wanted to create unrest.

The Hague had banned the demonstration, and that ban was later sanctioned by the courts, as it would not be possible to keep 1.5 meters away. Later, Mayor Johan Remkes allowed the demonstration after all, provided that protesters kept their distance from each other.

The police found that this was not the case during the demonstration.
