North Korea reports its first corona case – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

Until now, the authorities, in the country which is supposed to have around 26 million inhabitants, have claimed that North Korea has not had corona infection.

On the night before Thursday Norwegian time, however, the state news agency KCNA reports that the country has registered its first corona case.

It should be the highly contagious sub-variant of omikron BA. 2 that have been proven, writes Reuters.

Promises to stop the infection

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is said to have promised to overcome the infection. He has introduced a state of emergency and strict quarantine rules, writes AFP.

During a crisis meeting in the national police agency, the country’s leader is said to have said that the goal is to eliminate the root as quickly as possible.

“He assured us that due to the people’s high political awareness, we will certainly overcome the emergency,” it said in a statement from the country’s state news agency.

No to vaccines

The country has in the past declined coronary vaccines and said that the vaccines should rather go to someone who needs them more.

As early as January 2020, when the virus gained momentum in neighboring China, the North Koreans closed the border. Since then, according to the WHO, they have claimed that not a single case of infection has been registered in the country.
