North Korea Prioritizes Saving Kim Dynasty Portraits During Typhoon Khanun

Pyongyang

North Korea hit by a tropical storm Khanun. There is a special order for its citizens to save this thing.

Reported from The Guardian, Typhoon Khanun hit the Korean peninsula on Thursday (10/8). South Korea was flooded as a result of the typhoon.

After passing South Korea, Typhoon Khanun is moving across to the north this weekend. As in South Korea, the storm is predicted to destroy settlements because North Korea’s infrastructure is very weak. In addition, there is deforestation which makes vulnerability to flooding increase.

However, the North Korean government has other priorities for its citizens. Not the safety of citizens, but the main focus of the government is saving portraits of the Kim dynasty, namely photos of Kim Jong Un, Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung.

Not only that, citizens are also urged to protect a large number of statues, mosaics, murals, and other monuments of the Kim dynasty.

Portraits of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung adorn every home and office in the country. Residents can be sentenced to death if the photo is damaged intentionally or unintentionally.

“Don’t forget that North Korea is a theocratic country. These statues and portraits are not just symbols but sacred religious symbols,” said Andrei Lankov, a professor at Kookmin University.

“Since ancient times, every religion has expected its followers to be ready to die or at least ready to suffer to save holy icons,” he added.

North Korean state media said members of the military and ruling party had been ordered to prepare flood relief measures.

A few weeks ago, Khanun passed through South Korea. Flash floods and landslides killed at least 47 South Koreans.
