No second wave. The numbers must be put into context, agree epidemiologists – ČT24 – Czech Television

Prymula is not surprised by the growing number of patients and does not consider it a second wave. “The situation is not catastrophic, the whole republic is very calm. What makes the increase is dominantly the Moravian-Silesian Region, “he explains his optimism, adding that the second wave could be discussed at a time when cases would increase throughout the Czech Republic.

He emphasizes that the number of cases is not increasing, but the vast majority of positive tests come from the Karviná region. “It is clear here that the measures in the mines are probably not sufficient at the moment and will have to be improved in some way so that there is no such spread,” concludes the epidemiologist.

He also adds that the course of cases in the Moravian-Silesian Region is very mild. “Although there are so many cases, they are not clinically serious, but they are epidemiologically serious, because there is a risk that it will spread further outside the mines,” states the government representative.

According to Aran, people need to get used to the presence of coronavirus. He points out that in the Moravian-Silesian Region, covid-19 is currently spreading among young people, and therefore the impacts are not so great. “We should not show the numbers of new cases, but rather the numbers of how the hospitalization system is burdened,” the epidemiologist emphasizes.

Currently, the proportion of hospitalized people is around four percent, and the health system is therefore able to cope better with the situation, explains Beran. He also reminds that doctors and hygienists are able to diagnose new cases faster after the spring experience and can also determine the appropriate treatment faster.

The number of hospitalized is still declining, emphasizes Aries

Prymula adds that the infection is being managed outside the homes of the elderly. Now it is said that it is necessary to focus on working conditions in the mines in the Karviná region in order to prevent the spread among other miners. He also admits that experts do not yet have accurate data and it is not clear who became infected at work and who outside the mines. “Only raw data appear in the mass media, which can significantly distort the situation,” he warns.

According to Prymula, the presentation of numbers without context can harm the Czech Republic abroad. If the governments of neighboring states see alarming news in the media about the increase in cases and statistics without the necessary explanation, they may, for example, close their borders to the Czechs due to the alleged unfavorable epidemic situation.

Beran would like the data to be presented to the public in context – not only the number of new cases, but also the number of patients hospitalized. “It would be better to show both graphs, the successes of the Czech healthcare system. To show that the number of hospitalized is constantly declining. To point out that the Czechia is one of the best in the world, “believes the director of the Center for Vaccinations and Travel Medicine in Hradec Králové.

Mortality in the Czech Republic is around three percent, which is two percentage points less than in the US and more than five less than the average in Europe, notes Aries. “The situation is constantly under control, epidemiologists are able to trace all positive cases,” he acknowledges. It also emphasizes the role of citizens – positively tested must responsibly stay at home for two weeks to prevent the spread of the disease, warns the epidemiologist.

The vaccine could be in the Czech Republic at the beginning of the year, Prymula believes

Aries also emphasizes that once 75 percent of the population is vaccinated with the vaccine, further spread of the virus in the population will be prevented. “There is no third way. Either a person becomes ill or will be immunized against him. He has to develop some degree of immune response in order to be able to defend himself against the disease, “he describes.

According to Prymula, three vaccines have entered the third phase of testing so far. “It simply came to our notice then. As part of the acceleration, some companies have decided to go the way of combining different phases in order to obtain data faster, “he notes. He considers it realistic that at the end of the year the vaccine could already exist and production in the Czech Republic could start at the beginning of next year.

“If we vaccinated at-risk groups of up to three million people, it would be very mild for others, as we have experienced. That would be enough for the first stage, “adds Prymula.
