The festivities began this Saturday with a grand opening parade bringing together, around the King and the Queen, some of the parade floats, as well as flower battles, for an edition placed under the sign of rejuvenation.

The Nice carnival began on Saturday with a grand opening parade bringing together some of the parade floats around the King and Queen, as well as flower battles, for an edition marked by rejuvenation. After having strolled under an almost summer sun and in front of well-stocked stands, these floats were to return to service, this time in full, in the evening for the first illuminated corso of the fortnight. The carnival will end on March 2 with the cremation at sea of a wooden replica of His Majesty the King.

The theme chosen for this 139th Nice carnival, that of «pop culture», participates in the event’s rejuvenation operation. They include a Queen who looks like Marilyn Monroe in Seven years of reflection and the famous scene of the air vent lifting the actress’s dress or the King played by Luke Skywalker, one of the characters in the saga Star Wars.

This youthful look, “a necessity” according to the director of the carnival Caroline Constantin, will materialize with several new features, such as a K-pop Night on March 1st around the Korean variety, the addition of a stand on the Promenade des Anglais where the atmosphere, promises the director, will still be «plus festive»or the participation of influencers such as Cyprien in the creation of the tanks.

Reservations on the rise

While the municipality, which has been directly organizing this event since 2019, announced at the beginning of February a reservation rate up 15% compared to last year, the carnival capacity increased at the same time from 18,000 to 22,000 places. . Last year, ticketing brought the city 2.5 million euros, to which must be added 300,000 euros in partnerships with companies, for a budget of seven million euros and, according to the town hall, economic benefits greater than 30 million euros. Ticket prices range from seven to 28 euros.

This year 200,000 spectators are expected in the streets of the city for this carnival, one of the most famous in the world alongside those of Rio and Venice. After the Covid-19 health crisis which shortened the 2020 edition, prevented that of 2021 and reduced the gauge of that of 2022, the Nice carnival returned to normal capacity last year, for its 150th anniversary. Created in 1873, it was also unable to be held during the two world wars as well as in 1991 during the Iraq War.
