Newsletter: From ghost cars, balloon rides into space and HEPA masks for geeks

The top stories of the week

This week in the newsletter: We take a spin in the ghost car from 1939, drive the balloon to 100,000 feet and look through transparent respirators. Here are your top stories of the week.

This week was extremely transparent! By that I don’t mean our way of dealing with test equipment, travel, sponsors, but the “color”, or better: the condition is transparent. God, this heat – I’m talking about see-through, the lack of color, what allows you to look into the world through windows and glasses.

Before this introduction gets unnecessarily complicated, I quickly wave out of my transparent ghost car (Huhu, I’m here, in the trunk), stick my tongue out behind the transparent respirator and welcome you to the weekly top stories.

The last thing I did before I started texting this newsletter was screaming a loud F..K Covid-19 out into the world. It’s true, this virus still separates many of us from friends or family. In any case, it ensures that we cannot go about our leisure activities in the usual way.

As a reader of this newsletter, you may be like me. Yes, we now have the Corona warning app, download it diligently. Incidentally, other countries envy us both. Including Great Britain. Did you see Boris Johnson like him in the British Parliament? asked confidentlyWhich country on earth would please have a working Corona warning app? Labor leader Keir Starmer immediately had the answer ready: Germany! Available since June 15th, now over 12 million downloads. Ouch.

Full marks for Germany, but we are not here with the corona-related, virtual replacement ESC and also not with Who-Will-Corona-App-Download-Millionär. This is all real, it happens and I still ask myself: where are the clever inventions, the milestones that enable us to live a normal life again without the constant fear of being on the back of the neck, sitting in the wrong direction, touching the wrong place or staying below the minimum distance ? The LEAF mask brings a small glimmer of hope.

F..k Covid-19: This transparent N99 + mask really makes everything easier

A transparent protective mask that not only copes with facial recognition in the smartphone, but also does not hide your facial expressions. A huge plus, not only for people with hearing impairments. Who wants to look all the time, like a bank robber or a nocturnal Museum crawler? For us geeks, the technical part follows, but only so much at this point (everything else you need to know is in the article): The thing has a HEPA filter and app connection. F..ck Covid-19!

That was the most popular news of the week

The heat wave is coming: How to build air conditioning and protect your gadgets

The thermometer in Hamburg already showed 24 degrees on Friday morning. The coming days will hardly cool off, on the contrary. In some places, the 30-degree Celsius mark will be broken. I have for the home office at the last one Saturn bargain offer bought air conditioning at a really good price and still annoy me because the delivery date is now given as the next Tuesday. Too late, then the heat wave is long gone.

For this weekend I will therefore use tricks. Simple air conditioning systems can be easily tinkered yourself with really manageable effort. We explain to you how to do it best and what materials you need for it. We also wrote down numerous tips on how to use your smartphones, tablets and PCs save from heat death.

News from the software corner

Our colleagues continue to rummage through ours Audio categories in the download archive and leave blooming landscapes: No matter whether you Internet radio or Podcasts preferred – both categories have been completely revised and the software is waiting to be tried out by you. Maybe a good idea for the weekend?

Maybe there are prospective or already successful music producers among you? From classic Notation and composition to the production of Music of modern styles – there is so much software on the market that you cannot know everything at all. We have sorted the market for you and explain to you exactly when you should access which program.

Last but not least: Well played, Burger King

With what I believe to be a remarkable advertising chess move, Burger King became the focus of car fans this week. More precisely – in the focus of those of us who are interested in autonomous driving. As is well known, the Tesla and Co. autopilots can be tricked relatively easily. Often enough already tape for 50 cents.

The autopilot - here in a Tesla Model 3 - apparently confuses the Burger King logo with a stop sign and reduces the speed.

Now Tesla has installed an update for its vehicles over-the-air, which brought with it an automatic traffic sign recognition. The idea is not new: the car recognizes when it is driving towards a stop sign and automatically reduces the speed. It’s stupid for Tesla when Model 3 and Co. confuse the traffic sign with the logo of a well-known fast food chain and don’t go at the crossroads, but with a burger scent. If you discover such behavior in your “Smart Car” and upload a picture or video to Twitter, you will receive a free burger. Good for Burger King. But did the patties just invent the whole thing in the end? It remains nebulous.
