NEW YORK – Owning a car in New York City almost certainly means parking on city streets, which involves the usual routine of locking it up and leaving it overnight, hoping to find it intact the next day.
Last week, Chulani Sterling did exactly that in her Bronx neighborhood, or at least she thought she did. When he returned to use his car the next day, he found a curious note left by a stranger.
“I open the car door and my passenger seat was pushed back, my glove compartment was open and then I see the note on my dash,” Sterling told our sister network NBC New York.
The note read: “Thanks for letting me sleep the night in your car.” Close the doors next time. “
Sterling couldn’t believe it.
“I’m just saying, is this serious? That’s all I could think of,” he said. “Is this really, really? Did someone really leave a note on my dashboard and sleep in my car?”
She said whoever the stranger was, they didn’t steal anything, they just left the contents of their glove box strewn about. Sterling still has no idea how it happened.
“I could have sworn my car was locked because I pressed the button three times until it rang,” he said. “I could have sworn it was closed, but obviously I didn’t because they were there.”
Sterling said it rained heavily that night, and a part of her is glad she was inadvertently able to give this stranger a dry place to stay.
“It’s sad to know that and I know that you are not the only person doing that, looking for a place to sleep during this time,” he said. Sterling said he wishes there were more places for desperate people to have a dry and safe place to sleep.
