New York: These vantage points are not for the faint of heart

What it was a spectacle when the first skyscraper was erected in Manhattan. The Tower Building, built in 1889 and supported by a steel skeleton, towered eleven stories. When the wind whistled through the Broadway where it stood, people would come to see if it wouldn’t fall over. In 1914 it was demolished. At that time, there were already skyscrapers in New York that were more than 200 meters tall, including the Woolworth Building, which at 241 meters was the tallest building on earth.

Today, New York can no longer adorn itself with this record, because the world’s tallest house is in Dubai. Nevertheless, the east coast metropolis is still die High-rise city par excellence with the most famous skyline in the world. Some New York skyscrapers offer spectacular bird’s-eye views – we present the three most recent panorama points.

Summit One Vanderbilt: Optical Illusions

The skyscraper One Vanderbilt, which only opened at the end of October 2021, measures 427 meters, it is right next to the venerable Grand Central Station on 42nd Street – visitors come through the station concourse to the entrance of the “summit”. The viewing deck demands everything from the senses at a height of around 310 metres.

While still on the ground, visitors push their way past a video installation in meticulously formed queues to a table where overshoes for their own kicks are handed out. If you don’t wear them or come with high-heeled shoes, you won’t even be allowed into the dark corridor that leads to the elevator.

But whoever is inside arrives on the 91st floor in no time at all. And you have to get your bearings first. Because the summit extends over three floors, all of which consist of glass and mirrors. Also the floors. Optical illusions everywhere you look. Up can also be down, the sides reflect each other.

The architects at Snøhetta designed the glass-mirror game. And they have also left room for the view over the metropolis – which is almost calming for the brain stressed by impressions. The Chrysler Building within reach, behind it the East River. Past the Empire State Building, the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan, the One World Trade Center stands out the highest. To the west, the emerging Hudson Yards neighborhood. A wonderful all-round view.

Anyone who feels like visual clutter again or needs more photos for Instagram can throw silver reflective balloons around in the “Air” installation – a “multi-sensory art experience” by Kenzo Digital. Or, very old school, just go to the outdoor terrace and let the wind blow in your ears.

Edge at Hudson Yards: Glass floor over Manhattan

New York City is always crowded. Full of people, full of buildings, full of cars. And full of cranes: There is obviously still room somewhere to build something new – even in former no-go areas. Like in West Manhattan, between 30th and 40th streets.

On 34th Street the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden – for a long time there was only the siding of the Long Island Railroad behind it up to the Hudson River. Now the Hudson Yards, a new district, are being built here. Number 30 is already open, 395 meters high, with offices, apartments and a mall with the world’s luxury brands.

On the fourth floor between glass shops: the entrance to the highest outdoor vantage point in the western world, as advertised by the operator of the almost 345 meter high terrace, which seems to protrude from the building wall. It trumps the outdoor platform at the CN Tower in Toronto (342 meters) and that at the Empire State Building (320 meters).

It is surrounded by glass that slopes slightly outwards. Even part of the floor is transparent; recommended only for those who are really not afraid of heights. It is especially nice to go here before sunset and watch the night settle over the urban canyons and the lights begin to glow.

And the good news for ambitious photographers: There is a kind of concrete grandstand with steps. Sitting there, visitors can take their pictures south toward Lower Manhattan and west toward Midtown without the interference of glass.

One World Observatory: Highest view in New York

At 417 meters, New York’s highest vantage point “floats” in the city’s tallest building, One World Trade Center, which measures 1776 feet (541 meters). An iconic number, because 1776 is the year of the USA’s declaration of independence, when the British colonies broke away from the English crown.

The One World Observatory is on the 102nd floor and visitors remain behind glass. The 1 WTC not only offers the top vantage point in New York, but also the most moving story: The tower stands right next to Ground Zero, next to the memorial that commemorates the thousands killed in the attacks of 9/11 in the foundations of the twin towers of the World Trade Center September 2001 remembered.

The 1 WTC is therefore not just a skyscraper – but a fortress, anchored in the granite on which the city is built and, according to the architects, cast from a concrete stronger than has ever been used in New York City .

A total of 73 lifts distribute people to the 102 floors, most of them only stay on one floor. “Sky Pods” are the names of the five elevators that go to Observation Floor 102. Each lift needs 46 seconds for this. On the way up, you experience a ride through the history of the city, from the swamps to the metropolis, staged like in a film and projected onto the walls of the elevators using LED technology.

Then at the top: the most impressive view of Manhattan. To the Statue of Liberty and further towards the Atlantic, to the neighboring states. And of course the city. On the bridges. Direction Empire State Building and Times Square. If you want, you can borrow an iPad that is specially programmed in many languages to hear and see the history and stories about the buildings.

And when the ride goes back down, Hollywood comes into play once again. Suddenly, visitors no longer see a film around them, but imagine themselves three-dimensionally in a helicopter circling over Lower Manhattan. It feels so real that the ride could easily last a few seconds longer.

The spectacular view from the new World Trade Center

Almost 14 years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, it seems that New Yorkers can make peace with their history – also thanks to the observation deck of the new World Trade Center.
