New York faces shortage of police officers and rescuers

Up to 30 percent of New York police and fire officers could soon be at home – if they don’t get vaccinated. This can have dire consequences for the US metropolis.

New York is facing a fire and police bottleneck, and soon. An ultimatum expires on Monday, according to which the rescue workers must be vaccinated. There have been massive protests against this. The consequence could be that unvaccinated firefighters and police officers are not allowed to appear on duty.

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio told Reuters news agency that they would try to fill the gaps with employees and overtime. In addition, one wants to fall back on private ambulance transport. According to the mayor, 76 percent of those in uniform had at least one vaccination. In the fire department it is 64 percent, in the police about three quarters of the workforce.

Union officials told the news agency that up to a third of emergency workers could be sent on unpaid leave if they do not get vaccinated. Andrew Ansbro, President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, spoke of a “planned disaster” that could strike the city.
