New York Bracing for Second Winter Storm – Heavy Rain, Flooding, and Strong Winds Expected

What you should know

  • The New York area is bracing for its second winter storm of the season, as many living north and west of the city continue to reel from the first system that hit the region over the weekend, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places this weekend.
  • It was enough to close or delay schools across the Hudson Valley (see the list here) and trigger winter storm warnings for a swath of the region.
  • The system approaching Tuesday doesn’t threaten more snow, so Central Park’s nearly two-year snow drought continues. However, heavy rain, especially in addition to the weekend snow, is expected to make it a shocking storm and could cause flooding.

The system approaching Tuesday doesn’t threaten more snow, so Central Park’s nearly two-year snow drought continues. However, heavy rain, especially in addition to the weekend snow, is expected to make it a shocking storm and could cause flooding.

The National Weather Service has already issued a flood watch for New York City beginning Tuesday, January 9 at noon through Wednesday, January 10. Water accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are expected, which could cause flooding on roads and streets.

Additionally, the New York City Emergency Department noted that starting Tuesday at 6:00 pm all trucks with trailers will be prohibited from passing over MTA bridges due to expected strong winds.

The good news: Monday remains dry. Tuesday will bring heavy rain beginning late morning and intensifying through Tuesday night. Temperatures will rise into the 50s and that, combined with heavy rain, will cause rapid melting of the snow. Widespread river flooding is expected in New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley. Some can be serious.

New Jersey experienced major flooding in late December and many are still struggling with the damage.

Winds are also a concern, with gusts topping 50 mph Tuesday night. Power outages and downed trees can be expected. Gusts could be particularly problematic in Staten Island. The rain should ease before the Wednesday morning commute, but strong winds are expected to persist.

BE CAREFUL WITH BLACK ICE

In New Jersey, the State police ask residents to use caution when driving because black ice can form. This is because many areas received more rain than snow, and due to the low temperatures, black ice could form.

What to expect in the coming days

Once the next system leaves the region, we will see warmer temperatures on Wednesday, as well as residual flooding. The weather briefly improves for the end of the week, with mostly sunny skies and above-average temperatures on Thursday.

It could rain more on Friday night. Thunder is also possible. This could briefly begin as wintry precipitation in the far northwest counties.
