New Year’s Eve: Unauthorized demonstration against the authorities in Bern – Switzerland

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, dozens of people, some of whom wore masks, demonstrated against state power during an unauthorized rally in Bern. The police were on the scene with a large contingent.

The march, gathering groups from the far left, left late Tuesday evening from the station and then crossed the city center. Participants notably lit pyrotechnics and fireworks, according to images immortalized by a photographer from Keystone-ATS.

There were no major incidents. The mobilization temporarily disrupted public transport and ended after midnight at the height of the Schützenmatte, Bernese cantonal police said on Twitter.

Autonomous circles had called for this unauthorized demonstration on the German information portal Barrikade.info. Under the motto “Stay ungovernable – no law stops us”, the protesters criticized, among other things, the new cantonal police law which came into force at the beginning of the year. While marching, the participants, some of whom wore masks, denounced any form of repression.

Protection of minorities

This new law was overwhelmingly passed by the electorate in February. According to the authorities, it aims to offer modern tools to fight crime and to better protect victims of domestic violence.

But his opponents criticize several of its provisions, including for example that which would now allow the police to dislodge illegal campers who settle on private and public property. This particularly affects Travelers, they denounce. The police thus abolish the protection of minorities without presenting solutions, according to them. They also believe that the new law does not allow the maintenance of freedoms of assembly and opinion. (Ps / nxp)
