New “Sisi” series: With a lot of skin, sex and blood, a classic is brushed against the grain – nordbayern.de

Many fans consider the three “Sissi” films starring Romy Schneider to be sacred. You won’t believe your eyes when you see the new “Sisi” series (written here without the double S) on TV. There the young empress gets an abdomen – and there is also a lot of violence.

Kitsch, cult and imperial crown: the “Sissi” trilogy with Romy Schneider as Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary is not only a film myth in icing colors, but also a rock in the Christmas television program. Now the story has been re-filmed as a series and seasoned with sex and violence so generously that loyal fans of the classic from the 50s will probably gasp.

The tasty, piquant six-part “Sisi” (this time only with an S) can be seen from December 12th on the RTL + streaming service, and on December 28th the revealing series adaptation will start in the normal RTL program. The series was shot in the metropolitan region: in Ansbach, Bayreuth and above all in Bamberg.

The very first scene in which the young Elisabeth (Dominique Devenport) is caught masturbating by her sister makes it clear: Here someone wants to brush the familiar story against the grain.

At this point in time, the young heroine was still Duchess in Bavaria, a Bavarian backfish with a great thirst for freedom and a passionate rider. Actually, Sisi’s sister Helene (Pauline Rénevier) should marry Emperor Franz Joseph I (then Karlheinz Böhm, now Jannik Schümann) and thus become First Lady. But when the young women come to court with Mama Ludovika (instead of Magda Schneider, Julia Stemberger shines as a lovable happy noblewoman), the monarch immediately falls in love with Sisi: at the end of the second episode, the wedding is celebrated.

The six-part series tells the same phase in the life of the eccentric Empress (1837 – 1898) as the famous film trilogy, but it tells the story differently, that is: with a lot more blood and bare skin. Franz Joseph is a ruler with dark sides who cruelly suppresses an uprising by Hungarian rebels and is cursed by the widow of an executed revolutionary.

But the focus is of course on the beautiful Sisi: Newcomer Dominique Devenport is a convincing young girl with little life experience but an alert mind. Before the wedding night, she has a queasy feeling, she is not enlightened and does not know what to expect. One night she secretly follows the emperor when he goes into a brothel, befriends the prostitute Fanny (Paula Kober) and smuggles her in as her maid at the Viennese court.

Sisi, who goes to the school of sensuality with a sex worker? That’s a lot of stuff and becomes a bit vulgar at the latest when Fanny smuggles a wooden sex toy into the Hofburg, which is promptly discovered by the palace guards. The series, whose second season has already been commissioned, is swimming a bit on the “Bridgerton” wave: the Netflix hit series also combines historical material with erotic permissiveness.

Overall, the six-part can be seen, not least thanks to the strong main actors. Désirée Nosbusch plays Elisabeth’s mother-in-law, Archduchess Sophie – the script gives her beautiful sentences such as: “Feelings are an incorruptible sign of weakness.” Instead of the candy colors of the 50s, the aristocratic pomp is bathed in a gloomy light this time, but the series is opulent – and sometimes the characters even come a little closer to you.

With “Sisi”, RTL is ahead of the streaming service Netflix, which will launch its own series about the beautiful monarch next spring under the title “The Empress” Susanne Wolff as Empress in the cinema, who tells Elisabeth’s biography as a feminist story.
