“I came because they said it was Jeonbuk Hyundai in Korea.”

Coach Dan Petrescu (55, Romania), who was appointed as the 7th commanding tower of Jeonbuk Hyundai in the professional soccer K League 1, said at the inaugural press conference held at Hyundai Motor Studio in Goyang, Gyeonggi on the morning of the 14th.

Manager Petrescu, who played in the big leagues at clubs such as Genoa (Italy) and Chelsea (England) during his active career, is a leader with deep bones in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia as a commanding tower.

Recently, he has been active mainly in Romania, his home country, and has led Cluj to win the league four times (2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2021-2022).

Even though he has established himself as a leader with good results in his own country, he has chosen a new challenge on the Korean stage.

It is said that he made up his mind as soon as he received a call from Jeonbuk director Park Ji-sung and technical advisor Roberto Dimateo asking him to come.

Coach Petrescu competed with Jeonbuk in the group stage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League (ACL) in the 2016 season, when he led Jiangsu Suning (China).

Director Petrescu said, “I heard that it was Jeonbuk, and I thought I had to go right away. It is because it is the biggest club in Korea and Asia,” he said. From then on, I dreamed of coming to Jeonbuk,” he said.

“I have had many experiences as a leader, but I feel that Jeonbuk is the biggest experience. I feel very excited about taking the opportunity here.”

In the meantime, moving to various teams is pointed out as an ‘uneasy factor’. Debuting as a manager in the Romanian league in 2003, he moved 17 teams over the next 20 years before coming to Jeonbuk.

Director Petrescu dismissed this question as if it was not a big deal, saying, “I only need 10 years here.”

“I don’t know how the life of a football coach will go. Because every country and every club is different. Every time he chooses, he feels a burden and a risk, but he has to endure it. That’s why I accepted Jeonbuk’s offer,” he said.

Jeonbuk, which once fell to the relegation zone, raised the ranking to 5th place (27 points). However, the gap with the leader (44 points) Ulsan Hyundai is still large.

Manager Petrescu has stated that winning is his goal, but he has not promised that it will be this season.

“In the long run, becoming a champion is the ultimate goal. If not this year, I will achieve it next year.” That’s my style,” he said.

Before the press conference, CEO Heo Byeong-gil hung mufflers on coach Petrescu and other coaches, and director Park Ji-seong handed Petrescu a bouquet of flowers congratulating him on his inauguration.

Director Petrescu, who appeared with a warm smile like a grandfather’s, answered without hesitation with a determined expression when the interview started. The English sentences he wrote were short, and the words were easy.

The following is a Q&A with Director Petrescu.

— How do you feel about your inauguration?

▲ It was suggested by Park Ji-sung and Di Matteo. When I heard about Jeonbuk, I thought I should go right away. Because it is the biggest club in Korea and Asia. The contract period is 2 years and 6 months. We will develop step by step. We will achieve good results in the K-League as well as in the ACL.

— How did you feel about Jeonbuk?

▲ When I was leading the Chinese club, I played an away game in Jeonbuk, and I was very impressed with the great facilities and the great atmosphere of the fans. From then on, I dreamed of coming to Jeonbuk. He has had a lot of experience as a leader, but he feels Jeonbuk is his biggest experience. He feels great excitement about taking the opportunity here.

— Please tell us your goals for this season in detail.

▲ In the long run, becoming a champion is the ultimate goal. If not this year, I will achieve it next year. I don’t think about 5 games or 6 months, I only care about the next game. that’s my style There is a big gap with Ulsan, but trust is important.

— You must have watched Jeonbuk’s games after your appointment as Jeonbuk was confirmed. Which player left an impression on you? What is the style of Jeonbuk?

▲ I don’t want to talk about individual players right now. Because the team is the most important. I don’t want to limit my football style to any aspect either. The most important thing in football is the result. my goal is to win Mental strength is important for that. In the last 3 games, I saw Jeonbuk fighting as a team and winning. That’s what’s important. Soccer is simple.

— If you look at the teams you’ve led, you’ve moved to another team without working for a long time. Some fans understand this as a risk factor.

▲ There were times when it was 1 year, 2 years, 5 years. 10 years here. I don’t know how the life of a football manager will go. Because every country and every club is different. Every time you make a choice, there is a lot of pressure and risk, but you have to endure it. That’s why I accepted Jeonbuk’s offer.

— How do you plan to reinforce your team in the summer transfer window? Captain Kim Jin-soo, who is on loan, is likely to return to Al Nasr (Saudi Arabia).

▲ There will be no single decision. I will always share my opinions with the staff. I don’t know about Kim Jin-soo’s situation, but as the captain, I want him to stay on the team.

— It is difficult to lead a team mid-season. Do you have any know-how in this area?

▲ Everyone likes to take charge of the team before the season and figure it out step by step. However, I couldn’t miss the opportunity given by Jeonbuk. In the past, I had the experience of raising the rankings while taking on a team that was in the lower ranks at Al-Nasr or Dynamo Moscow (Russia). In Jeonbuk, it should be ranked 1st. It won’t be easy, but you are there. Because Jeonbuk is a high-quality team.

— He was appointed during the A-match break. We have some time to figure out the players.

▲ We want to quickly identify players and come up with good tactics. The first training is scheduled for tomorrow. We also want to address the injury issues currently in the team.

— Evaluate K-League soccer.

▲ It is bold, aggressive, and faster than other leagues. If you look at Korean players playing in Europe, they are very good.

— What do you think of the nickname ‘Danbeoji’ given by fans?

▲ It’s better to be called Danbeo. I want to be like a father to the players and I also want to take care of them like a son. Because of this tendency, the current coaching staff is also made up of former players I taught.
