New exhibition at the National Museum in Lublin. He’s the rebel they love

– Wróblewski’s exhibition is visiting our museum for the first time, and our collection includes beautiful works by this outstanding artist – emphasizes Katarzyna Mieczkowska, director of the National Museum in Lublin.

Andrzej Wróblewski was one of the greatest Polish painters of the 20th century. And although his life was short, he managed to create many original works. He was born in Vilnius in 1927 and died in 1957 during an expedition to the Tatra Mountains. He was an artist – a rebel, he experimented – also with themes. It is difficult to look for realism in his works, but on the other hand, even these deformed figures sometimes have more of an element of reality than the most realistic representation. Perhaps it is also due to the flat stain, because it was used by Wróblewski. Or maybe color, which in his paintings has a metaphorical function.

– Congratulations on the idea of organizing such a large, cross-sectional exhibition of Andrzej Wróblewski’s works. This is another success of the National Museum in Lublin. We recently opened Łempicka here. It is a great honor to cooperate with such a cultural institution – says Piotr Gliński, Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

The exhibition is intended to bring Wróblewski closer to his entire oeuvre – from his early abstract works, through works from the cycles “Szoferzy” and “Executions” – and this seems to be the most famous works – to late works, often done on paper, delicate studies of everyday life.

The exhibition brings together nearly 100 paintings and sketches by Wróblewski, complemented by 50 works by other outstanding and recognized artists. Why were they associated with Wróblewski? Because the artist was still inspiring during his lifetime, and as it turned out later, he had a great influence on others. With their works, these artists gave new meanings to the program of “direct realism” formulated by Wróblewski.
