New Axis of Evil: Russia, North Korea, and Iran Form, Shifting International Order

A new axis of evil called “Russia, North Korea, and Iran” forms, and the international order changes completely.

He said that the goal of “unification of the North and South” should be abandoned and that South Korea should be designated as the “number one enemy country.” Pyongyang, January 15 (Photo: Korean Central News Agency/Kyodo News)

Wars continue in Ukraine and Gaza, with no sign of a ceasefire anytime soon. Meanwhile, in Taiwan’s presidential election, Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lai Ching-toku was elected, which is seen as increasing the possibility of a Taiwan emergency.

North Korea approaches Russia

On January 17, President Putin met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Moscow. It is unusual for Putin to meet with a foreign minister of a foreign country who is visiting Russia, and the hospitality was outstanding.

Foreign Minister Choi had previously met with Foreign Minister Lavrov, and together with Lavrov, he reported the contents to Putin. Foreign Minister Choi also reportedly conveyed Kim Jong Un’s intention to invite Putin to visit North Korea. It also appears that there was discussion about increasing exchanges in fields such as the military, economy, and culture.

Last September, Kim Jong Un visited the cosmodrome in Vostochny, Amur Oblast, and held a summit meeting with Putin. In exchange for the supply of shells, it appears that they received Russia’s latest military technology. In particular, the launch of military reconnaissance satellites failed in May and August, and it seems that they were advised on measures to improve the situation. Thanks to this, North Korea successfully launched a missile on November 21st.

It has been revealed that Russia used not only North Korean-made artillery shells but also ballistic missiles in Ukraine. As the war drags on, North Korea’s role as a munitions factory for Russia is likely to grow.
