Netflix / Disney+

On the night of February 28 to March 1, 2021, the Golden Globes were awarded for the 78th time by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It is one of the most prestigious awards in the film and series industry. This year, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the evening as moderators.

The 2021 Golden Globes winners

The Disney + showcase series “The Mandalorian” had to make it into the Best Drama Series category Defeat Netflix production “The Crown”, which won the most awards in the series. Won in the film categories “Nomadland” and “Borat 2: Borat Anschluss Moviefilm” won the trophies for best drama and best comedy / musical, respectively. The “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020, was posthumously honored with the award for Best Actor in a Drama for his last film role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.

Special features of the nominations

In the run-up, the directors’ nominations in particular caused a sensation, because for the first time in the history of the Golden Globes, more than one woman was nominated in the directing category: Emerald Fennell, Chloé Zhao and Regina King. In this country, however, the gaze was directed more towards the young German star Helena Zengel, who was named Best Supporting Actress – but has now lost out to Jodie Foster.

Overall, however, the Golden Globes also show the growing influence of Netflix, which has only grown even more in 2020 due to the corona pandemic and the accompanying cinema crisis. In both movies and series, the streaming giant has made some of the top favorites.
