Nearly 2,000 people infected with the new coronavirus have died in the United States in the past 24 hours, according to a count at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Johns Hopkins University. It is the worst daily report in the world since the start of the pandemic. This record increase (+1939 exactly) brings to 12,722 the total number of deaths recorded. The first world power is thus approaching the two most bereaved countries so far, Italy (17,127 dead) and Spain (13,798).

The United States alone also has more than a quarter of officially declared cases worldwide: 396,223 in total, or 29,609 more over a day, according to figures from Johns Hopkins, continuously updated. “America continues to perform more tests than any other country in the world and I think that’s probably why we have more cases”, President Donald Trump said Tuesday during his daily press conference on the crisis, citing some 1.8 million tests to date in the country. “I know very well that some very populous countries have many more cases than us, but that they do not declare them”, he added.

The United States has recorded more than 1,000 new deaths daily since the middle of last week, despite the containment measures that have been gradually implemented there, state by state. New York State is the main focus of the American epidemic, with nearly 5,500 deaths and 140,000 cases, mainly in the city of New York, the economic capital of the country today almost stopped. Authorities warned last week that between 100,000 and 240,000 people in total could die from Covid-19 in the United States, depending on the model and following the social distancing guidelines.

The pandemic has killed at least 80,142 people worldwide in 192 countries, according to an AFP report from official sources at around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
