NASA Warns of Five Asteroids Approaching Earth in 2024: One Larger than Two Football Fields

Scientists from NASA have warned that five asteroids have been moving towards Earth since the beginning of 2024, and one of them could pose a danger.

On January 1, NASA scientists discovered several asteroids heading towards Earth. One of the most dangerous celestial bodies was the asteroid AY1 with a diameter of up to 219 meters (the size of two football fields).

Tomorrow, January 8, it will fly by the Earth, reports Space Reference with reference to data from the American space agency NASA. This asteroid was discovered in 2002 and is considered potentially dangerous because its orbit intersects with the orbit of the Earth. However, according to scientists, the likelihood of a collision with our planet is very low, since the minimum distance between them will be about 5.8 million kilometers, which is 15 times greater than the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Asteroid AY1 belongs to the Apollo group, which are characterized by large orbital semi-axes and low albedo. The size of this asteroid can be compared to two football fields or the length of a passenger plane.

Fortunately, NASA scientists say that none of the five asteroids spotted are expected to hit Earth. Several of them have already safely passed our planet on January 2, 3 and 6.

It was previously reported that at the end of August was approaching asteroid 6037 (1988 EG). Its diameter is equal to the length of nine football fields.
