Nacional remained as the leader of the annual table this Sunday after defeating Deportivo Maldonado 2-1 on the fifteenth and last date of the Clausura tournament, for which they went directly to the final of the 2020 Uruguayan Championship.
Two goals from Argentine Gonzalo Bergessio assured ‘Bolsa’ a place in the final. His rival will come out of the semifinal between Rentistas, winner of the Apertura, and Liverpool, who came out early champion of the Clausura.
In a Sunday of definitions, Defensor Sporting descended to the second division after drawing 0-0 with Cerro Largo, a shocking result for one of the most winning clubs in Uruguayan football.
Defensor was the team that cut the hegemony of the greats -Peñarol and Nacional- by winning the Uruguayan Championship in 1976, becoming the first team in development to achieve it in the professional era, since 1932.
He was also Uruguayan champion three other times, in 1987, 1991 and 2008.
The decline of the Violets was determined by Boston River’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, who lost their undefeated record.
A penalty scored by Ruben Bentancourt in the 86th minute saved him agonizingly from relegation and condemned Defensor, thus joining Danubio, another historic team, three-time Uruguayan champion, who will play next season in the B.
