Actions of Cathedral Bombers: Makassar Residents Bai’at ISIS

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The National Police succeeded in identifying the perpetrators suicide bomb in front of the cathedral church, Makassar, South Sulawesi on Sunday (28/3).

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the perpetrators were suspected of being part of the terrorist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

“The perpetrator was part of the JAD group that carried out the bombing in Jolo Philippines,” said National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo when he visited the crime scene (TKP) last night.

JAD itself is a terrorist group that is directly affiliated (baiat) with ISIS. They have been involved in a number of acts of terror in recent years, such as the bomb in Surabaya in 2018 and the stabbing of the then Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam), Wiranto.

Separately, the Head of Public Relations of the South Sulawesi Regional Police, Kombes Pol E. Zulfan, said that the man who carried out the cathedral bombing was a resident who lived in the Makassar area on a daily basis.

“We identified the perpetrator yesterday. The person concerned is indeed a resident of South Sulawesi, Makassar,” said Zulfan.

However, the police are still conducting deepening in relation to the daily lives of the perpetrators in the Makassar area, including the work they are doing. It is also not certain about the relationship between the male and female perpetrators who blew themselves up in front of the church.

“(Daily work) we are still doing deepening,” he added.

Zulfan only confirmed that the perpetrators were involved in the bombing incident at a church in Jolo, Philippines. It is known that the suicide bombing took place at the Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo, Sulu, on January 27, 2019.

A Philippine police investigation confirmed that there were two similar explosions that occurred on 27 January. The incident killed 23 people, the majority of whom were church members, and injured 102 others.

In early January 2021, the Indonesian Police’s Anti-terror Special Detachment (Densus) 88 has carried out a series of arrests of suspected terrorists in the Makassar area. During the arrest, the police shot dead two terrorists who were facilitators of fugitive Andi Baso – the bomber of the Oikumene Church, Samarinda several years ago and the Jolo bomb.
