Mumps outbreak in Bogotá: Symptoms, Prevention, and Vaccine Updates

“I started to feel discomfort, like muscle pain, but, days later, I saw lumps on both sides of my face. When I went to the doctor they told me it was parotitis.” These are the symptoms that the 143 cases that presented the disease this year may have felt, and although the cases decreased compared to last year, the District Health Secretariat (SDS) recommends preventive measures.

In Bogotá, with the cutoff of epidemiological week number six, from February 4 to 10, 2024, 123 clinically confirmed cases of mumps have been reported in the Epidemiological Surveillance System.

The entity’s experts explained that mumps is a benign disease caused by a virus that inflames the salivary glands and sometimes affects the reproductive system, that is, it can cause orchitis, oophoritis or mastitis, especially in adults in closed communities. . However, 40 percent are asymptomatic or indistinguishable from any acute respiratory illness.

It is very common for the disease to begin with fever, which can last from 1 to 6 days, but it also appears with muscle pain, general malaise, headache and lack of appetite, which is later accompanied by an increase in the size of the salivary glands, mainly the parotid, which is located under the jaw.

Vaccination

To prevent a high outbreak of this disease from occurring, the SDS says that the strongest weapon is vaccination.

Bogotá has the injection that protects against the disease mumps, which is known as (SRP) or ‘triple viral’, which also protects against measles and rubella. According to the entity’s experts, this has proven to be a safe and effective preventive measure to minimize risks.

The Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) includes free vaccination against mumps for boys and girls aged 1 year, as well as a booster that can be applied from 18 months to 5 years.

Bogotá, as of February 11, 2024, has applied around 14,000 doses of this vaccine in the population under five years of age.

Through the Public Health Plan for Collective Interventions, pedagogy and education actions have been developed, aimed at encouraging vaccination as a measure to reduce the risk of contagion or transmission.

The entity also explained that in coordination with various district sectors, including the Secretariat of Social Integration, the Secretariat of District Education and ICBF, they have participated in meetings, managing to identify users subject to the program to start, continue and complete vaccination schedules in accordance with age.

Call to parents

The SDS calls on parents and caregivers to update the vaccination schedules of boys and girls with the 22 available vaccines that protect against more than 27 diseases, including mumps, measles, rubella, hepatitis B , rotavirus, polio, pneumococcus, covid-19, among others.
