According to a police report, the five-year-old went under while bathing in the water. After he disappeared, the mother tried to save him. However, she herself was in need and had to be pulled out of the water by a passerby. The 30-year-old then ran into the Rhine again and also went under. Her 13-year-old daughter had also tried to help her brother in the river. Water protection brought the girl ashore unscathed.

The mother and son were found after one and two hours of searching. Despite attempts at resuscitation, the two could not be saved. According to a police spokesman, witnesses to the accident should now be heard.
