Mother is hit by a truck while walking with her baby in Miami – 2024-02-18 23:23:57

A woman lost her life on Wednesday, February 14, after she was hit by a truck while walking with her baby in the area of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 22nd Street, in the city of Miami, Florida.

According to the media Local 10 News, the incident occurred during the morning, when the woman, her baby and another pedestrian were trying to cross the street. While traffic was stopped, they were far from the pedestrian crossing, one of the factors that influenced the fatal outcome.

The police report indicates that the truck driver, apparently unable to see them due to the height of the vehicle and its position, advanced and collided with them, although he managed to avoid the stroller in which the minor was traveling.

The second pedestrian removed the baby from the stroller, but the woman ended up under the vehicle, losing her life before rescuers could arrive on the scene.

The aforementioned media points out that the baby was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital to carry out some medical examinations. Luckily, he remained alert and crying throughout the process, a sign that he had not suffered any bruises.

After the accident, police closed part of Biscayne Boulevard while they carried out the investigation. Initially, the woman’s identity was unknown, but Officer Michael Vega, a Miami police spokesman, identified her as 33-year-old Jaklin Sabag.

“The victim in this case was crossing in front of the truck, not at the pedestrian crossing. The truck driver obviously did not see that she was in front of her and proceeded to move forward, unfortunately, he ran her over,” the officer stated.

Vega points out that it was a mistake to cross away from the crosswalk, adding that he also made the mistake of stopping halfway to check for traffic.

“Not only did she cross in front of him, but when she reached the double yellow line, she stopped to look at the northbound traffic, to make sure she wouldn’t be hit, not knowing that she was standing in front of the huge truck,” he added. .

At this time, it does not appear that the truck driver will face charges, as evidence, including surveillance video, supports that it was an accident. That stretch of Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater is considered by police to be one of the most dangerous.

The situation has led to plans to be announced to intensify controls targeting drivers who do not yield and pedestrians who cross outside of crosswalks.
