The bird pounced on the child’s mother in a city park. She tripped and the girl named Mia fell from her arms. The child was seriously injured. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Rare and Tragic
An ambulance worker called to the scene of the incident called it a “highly emotional event,” which is “incredibly rare and tragic even for nurses.”

Family and friends have started an online fundraiser for Mia’s parents to raise money for the girl’s funeral. So far, 12,000 Australian dollars has been raised, which is about 7,500 euros converted.
Australian magpies, also called black-backed whistlers, are much larger than their European namesakes at 40 centimeters. They have a strong territorial drive, especially in the breeding season, which manifests itself in attacking anyone who gets too close. Last year, more than 1,200 attacks by magpies were reported in the state of Queensland, where Brisbane is located.
