The world has officially registered more than half a million deaths from the new coronavirus and ten million cases of infection since December.

According to an AFP count from official sources, on Sunday at 19:00 (there were officially 500,390 deaths in Chile and 10,099,576 cases.

The number of deaths worldwide has doubled in just under two months (250,000 on May 5). In the last 10 days there have been 50,000 deaths.

The number of reported cases globally has doubled since May 21, and more than a million new cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the past six days.

Europe is the continent with the most deaths (196,086 for 2,642,897 cases). It is followed by the United States and Canada (134,315 by 2,642,754), Latin America and the Caribbean (111,640 by 2,473,164), Asia (33,107 by 1,219,230), the Middle East (15,505 by 730,977), Africa (9,604 by 381,396) and Oceania (133 by 9,158).

The United States is the most affected country, both in number of deaths (125,747) and in cases (2,539,544). Although the number of daily deaths has decreased slightly in June compared to May, infections have increased in 30 of the 50 states in the country, especially in the largest and most populous in the south and west: California, Texas and Florida.

Current forecasts from the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessment (IHME) predict that the country could reach 150,000 deaths in mid-August.

The new coronavirus first hit China and a part of the rest of Asia. Starting in March, it fattened with Europe and then quickly spread throughout the United States.
Currently the epicenter of the pandemic is in Latin America and especially in Brazil, where since the end of May the daily balances usually exceed 1,000 deaths in 24 hours.

In the past seven days, almost half of the deaths have been recorded in the region. The continent also records more than 400,000 new cases of contagion in the same period, that is, more than a third of those detected in a week worldwide (more than 1.1 million).

After the United States, the most affected countries are Brazil with 57,622 deaths from 1,344,143 cases, the United Kingdom (43,550 by 311,151), Italy (34,738 by 240,310) and France (29,778 by 199,343).

Among the most affected countries, Belgium has the highest number of deaths in relation to its population, with 84 per 100,000 inhabitants, ahead of the United Kingdom (64), Spain (61), Italy (57) and Sweden (52).

These balances only reflect a fraction of the actual number of infections. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 20 million Americans have been infected, or ten times as many, equivalent to 5 to 8% of the population.
