More Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla details announced: less focus on naval combat, contemporary sections return

Earlier this week, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla was released by Ubisoft announced. This was accompanied by a cinematic trailer and we’ll be back have to wait a few days until we see the first gameplay footage. In the meantime, more and more information is emerging about the upcoming part, which takes us back to the era of the Vikings.

Eurogamer spoke to lead producer Julien Laferrière in an interview about Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and some new details emerged from this. For example, the developer could tell a bit more about a new feature that revolves around a settlement. This is a central hub, home to Eivor (the main character) and the Vikings on Eivors side. As you progress through the story, you will also see your settlement develop and choices you make will influence this.

“It’s your own Viking village you’ll see prosper and grow, and which your clan mates will live in. It’s at the center of our quests and the center of the decisions you make. We want players to see the consequences of their actions. ”

“It really changed the shape of the game we were making. Instead of exploring one territory, then moving on to another and having no real opportunity or reason to return, the settlement changes the structure. So you’ll go on an adventure and then be encouraged to come back to your settlement. It changes the way we’re playing the game we’re making – at least, that’s the bet we’re making. ”

Another thing that was discussed in the conversation with Laferrière is naval gameplay. In several earlier parts of the Assassin’s Creed series, combat with ships played a major role. And while Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla also lets you explore the game world by boat, it looks like we’ll be getting little to no naval combat in the game.

The well-known long ships of the Vikings are an important means of transport in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and that is also the primary goal. We should not expect large-scale battles at sea against other boats and the reason for this is quite simple. Vikings did not do this and their ships were not intended for this either. That’s why Ubisoft doesn’t think it fits in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, so the naval combat from previous parts doesn’t return the way we’re used to.

An aspect from previous games that does return are the contemporary sections of the story, Laferrière confirmed in the interview. The story of the character Layla continues and although the current gameplay is not always well liked, Laferrière hinted that things will be a bit different in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.

“We found a way to blend the present day into a new type of experience for players. And present day is playable – I can confirm that. ”
