More arrests in The Hague and Amsterdam after World Cup match in Morocco | Interior

Again people were arrested in The Hague and Amsterdam over riots after a World Cup match in Morocco. It also happened on Sunday after the duel with Belgium. Thursday evening in Rotterdam is still relatively quiet following Morocco’s victory over Canada, police said.

Police made six arrests in Schilderswijk, The Hague. At least two people were arrested for public violence, the others for throwing heavy fireworks. One officer was injured. It is not yet clear how this happened.

Police urged people to leave the area after which the Mobile Unit (ME) evacuated Vaillantlaan. Then peace returned. There are still groups of people on the street.

Due to the riots, the triangle (police, mayor and prosecutor’s office) of Amsterdam issued an emergency order for Mercatorplein at around 19:30. According to a spokesperson, it was still fun to start the evening. Gradually the atmosphere darkened.

Police asked people to leave the area first. Some did not respond, after which the police evacuated the square. According to the spokesman, the square is now “almost empty”. According to the police, several arrests were made around it.

In Rotterdam, where riot police had to intervene harshly on Sunday, no one was arrested. Because of the party supporters, there was traffic and nuisance on the Kruisplein. A small group threw stones and fireworks at police cars. The ME has dispersed the group.

Morocco defeated Canada 1-2 at the World Cup in Qatar on Thursday insured away from the round of 16. After Morocco won 0-2 against Belgium on Sunday, riots broke out in several major Dutch cities. Those riots were caused by supporters celebrating Morocco’s victory in the streets.
