In Baden-Württemberg, more children were born in March than in the same months in previous years. Statisticians see a temporal connection with the corona pandemic.
Uncertainties about the corona pandemic have not stopped many couples in Baden-Württemberg from having children. According to the State Statistical Office in Stuttgart, 9,330 girls and boys were born in the state in March. That was over eight percent more children than in March 2020. At that time, 8,615 babies were born. In 2019 and 2018, fewer children were born in March than this year.
This development fits the national trend. In Germany, there were almost 66,000 newborns in March, as many births as there had not been in a March for 20 years. The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden and also the Stuttgart statisticians have identified a temporal connection with the subsidence of the first corona wave and easing from the beginning of May 2020.

Development rather untypical
However, this development is atypical. “Because it is known that couples tend to forego the birth of children in societal crises and upheavals,” said a spokesman for the State Statistical Office. For example, after the collapse of the GDR, the birth rate in the eastern German federal states fell temporarily to a value of less than one child per woman. And the pandemic is also associated with uncertainties. In this respect, it remains questionable whether more children will be born in the coming months – compared to the same months in the previous year.
Statistics from statisticians show that birth rates fluctuate seasonally. Usually, most children are born in late summer, but very few are born in the winter months, as the experts announced: “In March 2021, as many children were born as was the case in recent years in June.”
