Monsoon floods the river banks with medieval art

Sacred art from Alto Aragón will take over Monzón this weekend at Arteria Medieval, a contest that extends its exhibition space to the cathedral with three original works and that will display fifty reproductions in the streets of the city. In this edition, it goes hand in hand with the Traditional Arts and Crafts Fair, which will bring together 23 stalls in the Azucarera park and will show the work of more than a dozen artisans in demonstration workshops.

The city will have tthree exhibition spaces: the Sosa riverbank, the cathedral and the Azucarera nave, in which the Alto Aragonese sacred art works will be distributed, to which are added three from Muret, a French town twinned with Monzón, donated by their authors, Henri Teisseyre and Marc Marbaresco.

The tour begins at the Sugar Factory, Different works of art will be displayed outside, and it will continue in the park of the same name, where the three Gallic works will be displayed, at the entrance to the Traditional Arts and Crafts Fair. A must-see space both to enjoy the craft stalls and the demonstration workshops and to collect the pass for the guided tour of the cathedral. With a maximum of 15 people per group, they will be free and can be held all day on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

From there, visitors can walk along the banks of the Sosa River, where 20 large-format canvases will show hermitages, details of buildings and of Gothic Romanesque and Gothic altarpieces both Cinca Medio and Ribagorza. Finally, accessing the cathedral through Calle San Antonio, you can see six large canvases of Romanesque churches and hermitages that will lead to Plaza Santa María, where 16 reproductions of Romanesque carvings, paintings and liturgical objects found in the Episcopal Museum.

Those who have reserved their pass, will be able to access the guided tour of the cathedral where, in addition to getting closer to the history of the temple, they will be able to admire a Romanesque carving of the Virgin of Chiriveta, which is exhibited for the first time in Monzón after being restored, a chrismon from Muro de Bellós and a Romanesque pyx, from the Diocesan Museum, as well as a silver processional cross and polychrome ashlars from the old collegiate church. This great urban exhibition can be visited from this Saturday until Sunday, June 20.

At the Arts and Crafts Fair, there will be silver, leather and jewelry items; wooden and cane toys; boxwood and mineral items; textile crafts … as well as chocolates, jams, anchovies, foie gras, beers, spices, cakes, cheeses, sausages and a long etcetera, all with the artisanal stamp. They will be displayed in the 23 stalls that will be distributed throughout the Azucarera park.

In addition, visitors will be able to contemplate the work of more than a dozen artisans in the demonstration workshops of stone, fabrics, pyrography, medieval cuisine, calligraphy, silverware, painting on water… Those who come dressed in their medieval costumes will receive a reproduction of a fleece that is part of the history of the city since it was a privilege granted by King Pedro I to the Monzón Mint, In addition to entering the draw for different gifts, by filling in a small form.

While strolling through the fair, they will be able to run into the characters of Guillem de Mont-rodón, Jaime I and their cousin Ramón de Berenguer, who will be visiting, and, if they come on Saturday at 12.30 pm, they will listen the live performance of the Anthem of Mont-rodón ‘.

In the morning and afternoon, from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 21:00, access will be made through a single point in order to control capacity and, within it, all sanitary measures must be observed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. In addition, establishments in the city can participate in the IV Medieval Shop Windows Contest, which the City Council organizes together with the Association of Entrepreneurs of Monzón and Cinca Medio, and which will award 250 euros to the one who best looks adorned with medieval motifs.
