Ministry of Health Urges Regional Governments to Increase Polio Immunization Outreach to Prevent Rejection

The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has asked regional governments (Pemda) to increase outreach regarding the implementation of the Polio National Immunization Sub-Week (PIN) to prevent rejection from residents.

“We are massively implementing this education, apart from the health service directly, through health cadres. We carry it out in collaboration,” said Head of the Communications and Public Services Bureau of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi at the ASEEC Building, Airlangga University, Surabaya, East Java, Thursday.

He emphasized the importance of socialization and education regarding the importance of polio immunization for children’s health following a number of residents who refused to give their children polio immunization in the Central Java region.

According to him, public literacy regarding the dangers of polio and efforts to prevent it need to be increased.

“What is certain is that regarding this matter, we are collaborating with the Central Java Health Service and the Semarang City Health Service to educate the public, explaining the benefits of this Polio Sub Pin,” he said.

He suspects that there are parents who think that polio cases are not found in Semarang, but in Klaten, so their children do not need to be immunized during Sub PIN Polio.

In fact, he explained, the government implemented Sub PIN Polio to prevent similar incidents from occurring in other areas within the same province.

“Mobility does not rule out the possibility of people from Klaten going to Semarang or Semarang people visiting Klaten. Therefore, we ensure prevention, just like the implementation in Surabaya, other areas in East Java also carry out Sub Pin Polio,” he explained.

However, he believes that parents’ awareness of including children in the Sub PIN Polio Program can increase after the implementation of education and outreach.

“This is still the third day, there are still about four more days of education and catch-up immunization after the one week Sub Pin Polio. Later there will be a period where we will do it more intensively, especially for groups that still refuse,” he explained.

Nadia said that the government is targeting polio immunization to cover 95 percent of targets during two rounds of Sub PIN Polio.

Meanwhile, the Head of the East Java Provincial Health Service, Erwin Astha Triyono, stated that he was ready to carry out directions from the Ministry of Health regarding increasing socialization regarding the implementation of polio immunization.

“We are doing our best for the community, so that we can convey the maximum benefits and impacts,” he said.

Erwin said that polio immunization had been carried out on 2,108,537 children or 65.3 percent of the total 4,437,679 children who were targeted for immunization during the Sub PIN Polio in the East Java region.

“East Java has reached 65.3 percent and Surabaya has reached 94 percent as of today,” he said.
