– With an average of 104 victims per day, we are in 3rd place in the world

– In hospitals a new record – almost 10,000 with COVID-19

After 6 weeks of rapid growth of those infected for the first time, the number of new patients increased by only 3%. 3623 new cases were registered on average per day last week. The number is at a record high, but the slight increase gives hope that this is the ridge of the third wave and from now on the epidemic will begin to subside. Of the 109,000 coronavirus tests, 23% were positive. There are already 67,864 active patients (+ 16%).

There were 9,679 people in hospitals on Tuesday (+ 11%) and 752 in intensive care units (+ 9%).

Despite the unprecedented workload, Health Minister Kostadin Angelov said they had managed to prepare and the system was sufficiently secured to withstand the third wave.

Last Wednesday, with 8,927 people in hospital and 729 in intensive care, the Minister of Health announced in Burgas that 69% and 70% of the beds were occupied, respectively. According to these data as of March 24 there were 12,750 beds in Bulgarian hospitals and 1,050 in intensive care units.

According to these calculations, as of March 30, 76% and 72% of the beds are occupied, respectively. However, there are areas with much higher workloads (over 90%) and the danger of a bed crisis has not yet passed.

723 are sick per 100 thousand population on a two-week basis as of March 30 (see table).

Levels are higher than the worst period of 2020, but tests are now over 100,000 a week at a ceiling of 50,000 then.

Mortality in our country remains almost unchanged for the third week. An average of 104 people died per day, compared to 102 in the previous year.

With 15 victims per million population per day, Bulgaria is already in 3rd place in the world in the ranking of worldometers.info, equating the victims to the size of the population. (See table.) We are ahead of only Hungary with 25 per million and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 21.

The epidemic situation in most Balkan countries continues to deteriorate, and the region is becoming the epicenter of the epidemic for the second time this season. In the world as a whole, the number of new cases increases by 12% per week and the number of victims by 8%.

In terms of the total number of victims per capita since the beginning of the pandemic, we have surpassed Great Britain and are in 9th place in the world.
