“I’m lying in the bath and the phone rings. I’ve already been washed, but I’m rolling in warm water, I’m fifteen, so God knows what I’m doing there. (laughs) I pick up the phone and it says, “Hi, this is Miki Steeram I talking to Mr. Filip?’
What do you think?
“I also have to add that there was a conversation with the parents beforehand along the lines of: “Miki Volek?! Do you even know who he is?” And I said: “Well, I don’t know, some crazy person from an asylum.” And they: “He’s our idol, we grew up on him!” So I was already educated and I was very scared from the fact that such a mega star is calling me.’
And what did he want for you?
“He said he was alone and wanted to talk. I remember the water slowly draining out of the tub and he kept talking. I was already knocking with the cold. Then we met.’
He was said to be bisexual, is that true?
“There is still speculation about his homosexuality, but I have to confirm that he never attacked me in any homosexual way. Maybe there are rumors about what he experienced, when and with whom, but otherwise he was a guy who was into girls.”
Why did he care so much to be friends with you? After all, he was forty-two and you were fifteen.
“He didn’t care that much, he just wanted to talk, he tried. He was alone, completely abandoned. He also wanted to get among the young. He was once a huge star and suddenly he was at rock bottom. That’s how we met and understood each other very well. He taught me all the vices of the world, in the sense that he showed me my first pornographic photo, poured me my first shot, beer. I then arranged his funeral, and that was difficult.’
You even found him after death, didn’t you?
“Well, he found… He basically had nowhere to live. So he sometimes went to the asylum and often stayed with me. Meanwhile, my daughter was born and we wanted to go away for the whole vacation. He asked where he would be and what he would do. So I quickly found him a completely empty apartment in Veletržní street. He wanted money, but I had a small child. So I advised him to go to Intergram, because they had been playing it on the radio for years. He didn’t even know what it was, but he went there. He probably received some large sum of money that was owed to him. He was already in a bad way and wasn’t allowed to drink alcohol, but since he got money, he was having fun.”
And it cost him his life…
“After the holidays we came back, looked for him, pounded on his locked door and nothing. So I went to the police saying that I was afraid that my friend was dead in the apartment. They said what to do with it and that they would call the fire department, but if it wasn’t there, the bill for the trip would be on me. So I say it’s sharp, but good.’
DEADMAN’S SEVERED FINGER
Did you go there with them?
“I was standing in the courtyard of a boarding house. The firemen broke the window and suddenly a horribly sweet stench spread throughout the yard. The fireman, who ran through the window and unlocked the door from the inside, threw a terrible »saber« from the window. So everything was clear. They wanted me to go identify him, which I declined after seeing the professional’s reaction. They said they understood and brought me a finger in a bag with a ring on it. So it was more like a bone, a bit of meat, but more like a bone.’
Why did they bring a ring with a finger?
“Because it just broke off. I recognized the ring and they, let me keep it.’
Even with that finger?
“Even with that finger.”
And what did you do with it?
“I wouldn’t do anything about it. But my wife, Monika, a brave nurse, threw it all in the trash, and after three days, only the ring was there.”

“Well, sure, I have. Is special. It’s made of white gold and has a little aquamarine heart in the middle.’
Then why and who blamed you for Miki’s death?
“His wife, from whom he was already divorced, and his drunken friends. They also put it in the media. They say that because I advised him about Intergram, and that if I hadn’t advised him, he wouldn’t have gotten drunk, because he wouldn’t have. Such nonsense!’
At the same time, it was you who arranged his funeral in a complicated manner.
“I intensively raised money for it, it was necessary to raise at least ten thousand and it was very interesting. I walked past all those people Janet s Gottwho gave me maybe fifteen hundred crowns. Peter the Widow, with whom Miki was in the Olympics for a long time, gave me about six hundred crowns and a fat contract to claim in the media that he paid for the funeral. I went around to all the people in the industry and everyone gave two hundred against the signature. I’ve come to terms with the fact that Miki probably won’t have a funeral. When I ran into a singer at the bar of the Theater U Hasičů Peter Novák, who had a concert there. He reached into his back pocket, pulled out ten thousand, gave me seven and told me he had to keep three for Fernet. He didn’t want to sign anything – a person who wasn’t much better off than Miki.’
