Microsoft won’t raise Xbox Live Gold subscription prices after all | NOW

Microsoft has reversed the price increase announced on Friday for Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. The decision also applies to the proposed price changes in the Netherlands, a spokesperson on behalf of the company told NU.nl on Saturday.

Xbox Live Gold allows players to play online games with each other. Subscribers also get free games every month.

In the Netherlands would the price of a subscription will increase by 2 euros to 8.99 euros per month. A quarterly subscription would be 4 euros more expensive: 23.99 euros. So that will not happen.

The prices for longer subscriptions also remain the same, the Microsoft spokesman reports. Six- or 12-month subscriptions are not sold directly by Xbox, but are available from retailers.

In addition, Microsoft is announcing that free Xbox games no longer require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. This adjustment will be made “in the coming months”, but the spokesperson was unable to say when exactly.

Improvement: An earlier version of this article stated that Microsoft would now also offer online subscriptions for six months. That is incorrect: subscriptions longer than three months were and are still only offered through retailers.
