The British auction house Christies last night sold a pair of sneakers used by the former basketball star Michael Jordan for 615,000 dollars.
When the hammer fell, it was still below the expected price of between 650,000 and 850,000 dollars, corresponding to between 5.7 and 7.5 million Norwegian kroner at today’s krone exchange rate.
The shoes were used by Jordan in a show match in Italy, and are best remembered for Jordan pounding the ball so hard in the basket that the glass plate behind broke. The shoes were then also sold with a piece of glass attached to the sole. The shoes are also signed by the superstar, and are a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 High in size 47.
Big business – also in Norway
In addition to tonight’s record pair, the auction house has recently sold eight other Jordan pairs for a total value of about 318,000 dollars, equivalent to just under three million kroner. Thus, the auction house has sold nine pairs of shoes for almost nine million kroner. This corresponds to sneakers for more than a million kroner per pair.

Resale of sneakers is big business here in Norway as well, even though it will be pocket junk compared to tonight’s auction. In June, DN wrote about skateboardkjeden Session which has a monopoly on Nike’s exclusive sneaker launches in Norway. The shoe pairs that are sold can a few days later be resold on the second-hand market for up to 100,000 Norwegian kroner – without having been used by a single superstar.
