Daimler settles fraud for 2 billion dollars

The parent group of Mercedes-Benz pays Washington a hefty fine and reimburses 250,000 buyers of a cheat diesel.

A new episode in the diesel scandal. Daimler

allocates 2.2 billion dollars (1.8 billion euros) in the US to reach a settlement with the US authorities and the affected customers.

The star brand will pay $ 1.5 billion in fine and set aside $ 700 billion for the mass claim of buyers of 250,000 cars and vans. The impact on the free cash flow (EUR 1.4 billion last year) is correspondingly spread over three years, of which the largest part in the next twelve months. Daimler says in the communiqué.

It is not the first time that CEO Ola Källenius has reached deep into his pouch to leave Dieselgate behind. The counter stood at more than 4 billion euros – partly due to a hefty fine in Germany – and with the American settlement it has reached the milestone of 6 billion euros. The hefty hangover made the Swedish top man send out a profit alarm several times.

Volkswagen lied to US authorities, while Daimler cooperated with the watchdogs. Volkswagen sold 600,000 cheat diesels in the US, around 11 million cars worldwide.
