We are not even a week into 2021 and we already have news of one of the first losses of the year. This is the British director Michael Apted. The agency that represented him confirmed his death at the age of 79. The director is best remembered for dramas The miner’s daughter, Gorillas in the Mist – 82% y Nell – 53%. He was also the director of television and a documentary series that tried to tackle the economic problems in the UK.

In accordance with Variety, Michael Apted He passed away at age 79. The Gersh agency was the one that confirmed the death of the director. No details were given on the cause of death. The director was president of the Directors Guild of the United States for six years, from 2003 to 2009. In response to the news, the organization released a statement regretting and sharing its condolences for the event:
Our hearts are broken to mourn the passing of the esteemed director and former union leader. His legacy will forever be woven into film and our union. A fearless visionary as a director and unparalleled union leader, Michael saw the trajectory of things when others did not and we all benefited from his wisdom and dedication.
The most outstanding work of Apted, who began his television career in 1964, was undoubtedly The Miner’s Daughter. That film is a biographical musical about country singer Loretta Lynn, from her teenage years until she became one of the most influential stars of that genre. The film starred actress Sissy Spacek and was nominated for 7 Oscars in 1981, eventually winning the statuette for its leading lady.
The British career does not stop there. In 1988 he also managed to capture the attention of the Hollywood Academy after his film Gorillas in the Mist. This film, which is also inspired by a true story, tells the story of a woman who decides to dedicate her life to the study and preservation of these primates in Rwanda. The film starred Sigourney Weaver, right after the tremendous success it had with Alien – The Eighth Passenger – 97% and its sequel. She was also nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this collaboration with Apted.

And if that were not enough, Jodie Foster is also an actress who owes one of her nominations for the golden statuette to Apted. They both worked together on the drama Nell – 53%, film about a young adolescent girl’s problems adjusting to living in a community after being raised in isolation by her mother in a cabin. This story is the adaptation of a work of the same name. It was one of the best films in which this interpreter worked after the success of El Silencio de los Inocentes – 
94%.
Apted also worked on major franchises and directed the James Bond installment 007: El Mundo Not Enough – 51%, as well as the fifth installment of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – fifty%. His last feature film was the thriller Unlocked – 25% of 2017. He is survived by three adult children and his wife Paige Simpson, whom he married in 2014. Rest in peace.
