Mexico will follow mitigation protocols for a new coronavirus: Health

Hugo López Gatell Ramírez, Undersecretary of Health Prevention and Promotion, reported that with respect to the new coronavirus, Mexico will follow mitigation protocols that will seek to reduce the possible effects of the disease, stressed that human rights and freedoms will be respected in the country civilians of all people.

“There is no aspiration to contain the transfer or spread of the disease, of this COVID-19, but it aims to limit the damage, to protect the most vulnerable population, to guarantee the prompt and effective attention of the cases,” he said.

The undersecretary said that if the coronavirus in Mexico had a community spread, the numbers of those affected would be similar to those of influenza, that is, a third of the country could get COVID-19 which does not mean that all cases are serious.

“The numbers of those affected would resemble influenza, there are some estimates that it could reach up to 70% of the population infected with coronavirus, we would talk about 75 to 78 million people infected and about 10% or 12% of those could have symptoms , which are between 8 to 10 million and of these 2 to 5% would present a serious illness and we have to make it clear that it is not exempt that when the virus arrives and there is widespread community spread, there could be deaths. “

In a press conference, accompanied by Oliva López Arellano, Health Secretariat of the CDMX, José Luis Alomía, director of Epidemiology and authorities of the IMSS and ISSSTE, the undersecretary indicated that next week will begin phase three of “Preparation”, which consists in conducting drills and informing society about this virus, from different sectors.
