Mercedes-Benz releases further specifications EQS

The unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz EQS is now not long in coming. In the run-up to the unveiling on April 15, the brand already reveals some important specifications. Initially, the EQS seems to come in two different variants and the range is a maximum of 770 kilometers.

The EQS will be the electric flagship for Mercedes-Benz. The interior, including the 1.41 meter wide hyperscreen, was shown before and also on the outside the EQS actually knows few more secrets. From a technical point of view, people mentioned earlier mainly a range of ‘more than 700 kilometers’, but otherwise not much was known about it. However, Mercedes-Benz is now releasing two variants in which the EQS is the first to enter the market: the EQS 450+ and the EQS 580 4Matic +, with which the brand maintains the type designations of the petrol models.

The EQS comes on the market with power ratings from 333 hp to 523 hp. Whether these are also the powers that belong to the EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4Matic + is not explicitly stated by Mercedes-Benz, but it is in line with expectations. In terms of torque, the brand does: the EQS 450+ releases 568 Nm on the rear wheels and the EQS 580 4Matic + pulls the pavers loose via all four wheels with 855 Nm of torque. From the type designations it can already be deduced that the EQS 450+ has an electric motor, called eATS by Mercedes-Benz, on the rear axle, the EQS 580 4Matic + also has an electric motor on the front axle. Acceleration figures are not yet mentioned, but the top speed is limited to 210 km / h. Incidentally, there will also be an ‘even more powerful performance version’ at a later stage, which probably indicates a AMG variant of the EQS.

Battery packs

The size of the battery differs depending on the drive selected: the EQS 450+ has a battery capacity of 90 kWh with its rear-wheel drive, while the EQS 580 4Matic + has a larger battery pack of 107.8 kWh in the ground. According to the NEDC cycle, the 450+ is marginally more efficient than the 580 4Matic + (19.1-16.0 kWh / 100 km versus 20.0-16.9 kWh / 100 km), but the range per model remains below the cap. Mercedes-Benz does mention that the 770 kilometers can be achieved with the 19-inch AMG wheels and in the ‘Sport’ driving mode. Optionally, the EQS can be equipped with a 22 kW on-board charger, fast charging can be done with a charging speed of up to 200 kW. In that respect, the EQS does not score as well as the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, which can fill their batteries with 270 kW.

In order to make optimal use of the range, the navigation system of the EQS shows the charging points on the route and the car calculates how much it costs to fast charge at those charging points. All you have to do is plug in the cable and the car will automatically charge the amount to be paid. The EQS also estimates whether you can still make the return trip to your starting point with the current battery charge.

The official unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz EQS is scheduled for April 15.
