Melanie Leupolz changes to Chelsea: FC Bayern lose their captain

The FC Bayern Munich footballers lose their captain Melanie Leupolz at the end of the season. As the Bundesliga club announced, the 25-year-old international surprisingly switched to Chelsea in London. “After six great and very formative years with the FCB women, I will switch to Chelsea in the summer. I would like to thank everyone who accompanied me on my way in Munich,” said Leupolz.

The midfielder had come to Bayern from SC Freiburg in 2014 and in her first season had brought the team to Munich for the first time in 39 years. In 122 competitive games she scored 19 goals. For the past two years, she has led the team as captain.

Leupolz still had a few things in mind until they changed. Bayern are currently in second place in the women’s Bundesliga table. VfL Wolfsburg, however, has an advantage of eight points. “As long as it is still mathematically possible, we will not give up. Why should we do that? We know that it will be difficult. But we are happy to take on the challenge. But it is also clear that qualifying for the Champions League is a top priority for us, “said Leupolz in an interview with DFB.de at the beginning of March.

In perspective, she explained, they wanted to play for the title from the beginning in the coming season. “We are currently building something up to be able to compete for the title in Germany or internationally,” she said. It will now do that in the UK.

Until then, there are still a few games for Leupolz at FC Bayern. The team is still playing for the title in the league and the Champions League, internationally the women are in the quarterfinals against Olympique Lyon. However, as with men, women are currently suspended from playing until at least mid-April due to the corona virus. It is currently unclear whether and when the season can be resumed.
