The discovery of a ‘unified theory’ that explains all the laws of nature in a single framework — linking Einstein’s general theory of relativity about the large-scale universe and quantum mechanics — remains a major challenge in modern theoretical physics.
Researchers from Chalmers University of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tried to understand these natural laws with mathematics.

Daniel Persson and Robert Berman, along with MIT’s Tristan Collins, show how gravity emerges from special quantum mechanical systems, in a simple model for quantum gravity called the ‘holographic principle’.
“Using techniques from mathematics that I have researched before, we have succeeded in formulating an explanation of how gravity arises with the holographic principle, in a more precise way than has been done before,” explains Robert Berman who is also Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. this.
Their findings also offer new insights into the mysterious force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe, also known as dark energy. In Einstein’s theory of general relativity, gravity is described as a geometric phenomenon. Even a vacuum has a rich geometric structure.
According to this theory, dark energy can be seen if it is able to zoom in and see empty space at a microscopic level.
This new work is known to lead to new insights into how and why these microscopic quantum mechanical ripples arise, as well as the relationship between Einstein’s theory of gravity and quantum mechanics.
