Marta Grigale Opens Up About Writing Music in Difficult Moments and Transitioning to English Songs

Grigale tells the presenter Jānis Šipkēvics that she needs to cry in the most difficult moments of her life: “I generally cry quite a lot, I laugh a lot, I have those emotions on all sides. And of course sitting down at the piano therapeutically and writing out the pain is also something I do. In fact, one of the most profound songs was written in those moments.”

She cites examples from her work – the song “Filma ko nejnju seti”, which is about the war, and “I’ll be enough”, which was written at a very difficult moment:

“I felt, well, so inferior to the earth, so untalented and so unnecessary that I sat, cried, wrote, and such a miracle came from those tears at the end.”

Asked about the song in English, the musician says that a new phase has begun for her, and the year 2023 was a year of great changes.

“I decided that I also needed to change something in my creative life, and it was also inspired by meeting wonderful people from Sweden, from other countries, who told me: “Hey Marta, everything is fine with you!” And I am one of those people who grow not from being scolded and scolded, but from encouragement, and I felt so very, very uplifted and so encouraged that I let go of that fear a little more and dared to start writing in English,” says Grigale.
