Eventually, both victims are able to run off into the chaos.

New York City Police investigators identified the suspected shooter as Gary Cabana, 60, a former member of the museum. Nearly 24 hours after the incident, authorities are still searching for him.

During a press conference Saturday night, New York Police Deputy Commissioner John Miller said that Cabana, who is known to police from previous incidents, allegedly tried to enter the museum around 4:15 p.m. pm with his membership card to see a movie, but was denied entry because his membership had been canceled for misconduct the day before at the museum.

Moments of panic: suspect stabs two MoMA employees inside the museum

Miller also said a letter was sent Friday informing Cabana that his membership had ended.

At that moment, the uniformed officer said, the alleged attacker became upset and jumped the reception table and stabbed two of the museum employees several times. The woman was stabbed twice in the lower back and the back of the neck, while the man was stabbed in the left collarbone. Both victims were immediately taken to Bellevue Hospital and are in stable condition.

The suspect is described as a white male who was last seen wearing a black jacket, colorful shirt and blue surgical mask. Police released three photos of the suspect.

Immediately after the events, an evacuation was triggered and officials closed the museum for the investigation. Videos posted on social media show dozens of people leaving the museum as officers entered the scene.

the police toalerted people at that time to avoid the area near West 53rd Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue while the investigation was underway.

The institution was packed with visitors when the attack occurred. Among those was David Dujerko of Chicago.

“All of a sudden they said ‘the museum is closed’ and people started running. A little bit of panic on the escalators and then they started yelling ‘get out, get out for your own safety,'” Dujerko said.

On Sunday the museum said it would be closed to the public until Tuesday, March 15, in the wake of the attack.

The mayor’s press secretary Eric Adams tweeted nearly two hours after the stabbing and said he had been briefed on what “appears to be an isolated criminal incident.”
