Manchester United and Tottenham may be poised for a summer battle for Norwich City defender Max Aarons, according to reports.
The 21-year-old right-back has enjoyed a stellar season with the Canaries, starting all 28 matches of the Championship. It has helped the East Anglian team to the top of the rankings.
They are looking for an immediate return to the top flight after finishing last of the Premier League in 2019-2020. And the signs are good despite a three-game winless streak.
Aarons he played every minute of 36 league appearances last season. He could not avoid the descent, but was impressed by Norwich’s busy rear.
The England Under-21 ace appears to have caught the attention of United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to The Express. It seems as if the Norwegian strategist wants a new man to provide competition Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The arrival of Alex Such seems to have given Luke Shaw shot in the arm on the left side. And the hope is that Aarons can do the same with Wan-Bissaka.
That may well mean the end of the line for Diogo Dalot. The young Portuguese is on loan to AC Milan after failing to make the grade at Old Trafford.
Aarons has impressed enough on Carrow Road to be linked to the Spanish giants Barcelona. In September of last year it looked like he was going to sign a long-term contract at the Camp Nou.
That didn’t happen, while the Red Devils and Tottenham were also mentioned as possible suitors.
Aarons in lugar of Aurier
With reports that José Mourinho will seek to move Serge Aurier this summer, Aarons could find himself on the Spurs. Aurier, 28, is on the bad books after leaving the stadium at halftime during Liverpool’s defeat.
The Ivory Coast international was accused of Roberto Firmino’s goal and did not take criticism well. Mourinho is reportedly unimpressed and could mark the end of his stint in North London.
Aarons is rated as one of the best young full-backs in English football. If a club the size of Barcelona is interested, they surely have the ability to play anywhere in Europe.
It was reported in late January that the Spurs were once again exploring the London born star. Finances are tight in most clubs, so nothing happened, but summer can see a bidding war.
