Man Born Without Genitals Receives ‘Bionic Penis’ in Life-Saving Surgery

Jakarta

Adam probably never imagined being born without genitals. However, being born without a penis is not impossible. Some medical records show rare cases of men being born without vital organs.

This is also felt by Andrew Wardle. The man from the United States was born with a rare health condition called bladder exstrophy, which means he was born without a penis, one testicle and a bladder outside his body.

Andrew, who is currently 51 years old, has always been going back and forth to the operating room since childhood. Until finally at the age of 44, he underwent major surgery, receiving a ‘bionic penis’.

“My doctor knew about my depression and suicide attempts,” Wardle told the Daily Mail.

“He told me: ‘You can’t live like this.'”

Wardle met Dr Dan Wood, a consultant urologist at UCLH in London, who explained that he could make Wardle a new bladder. Wood’s colleague, Dr David Ralph, a fellow urologist and specialist in genital reconstruction, said he could make a penis for him.

In November 2015, Ralph underwent Wardle’s first surgery to create his penis, which ultimately cost him around 65 thousand US dollars.

The operation, which took 10 hours, was carried out by creating a new organ from the skin of his arm. After the operation, Andrew experienced an erection that lasted for 10 days.

“I think it saved my life more than my penis. The urostomy was the worst thing. I didn’t feel like a human being, but I thought I was stuck with it,” he said.
