Male Workers Experience Menstrual Pain in Tokyo Telecommunications Company for International Women’s Day

Jakarta

A male office worker at a telecommunications company in Tokyo tries out a simulation of menstrual pain. This is done to help them be more sympathetic towards female colleagues on International Women’s Day which falls on Friday (8/3/2024).

The male workers at EXEO Group began to wince in pain as the ‘perionoid’ device transmitted electrical signals through a pad placed under the navel. This functions to stimulate the lower abdominal muscles and cause a cramping sensation.

“I can’t move. It hurts to the point where I can’t stand,” said Masaya Shibasaki after using a device jointly developed by researchers at Nara Women’s University and Osaka startup Heat Cool, quoted from ReutersFriday (9/3)

“I now understand that women have to work while fighting this pain every month. It’s amazing how women can do that. I really respect them,” said the 26-year-old man.

EXEO said this activity was carried out to create a good work environment, where more than 90 percent of the male workforce can be more supportive of female colleagues, including when it comes to taking menstrual leave.

Companies in Japan are legally required to allow women to take menstrual leave. However, there is no requirement for paid time off and surveys show around half of female workers never take it.

“We hope that those who experience (menstrual pain) today return to their workplaces and express their feelings, and spread their understanding,” said EXEO public relations officer Maki Ogura.
